Five faculty receive University level honors recognizing their excellence in teaching, mentoring, research, and outreach.
Human Development and Family Sciences Professor Alan Acock received the OSU Distinguished Professor Award, a lifetime title and the University’s highest honor. He is the Barbara Emily Knudson Chair in Family Policy and a well-known researcher who has altered how individual and family well-being are studied. Alan is author of A Gentle Introduction to Stata, making the world of statistics more “user friendly” for researchers. He is a fellow of the National Council on Family Relations and recipient of the organization’s coveted Ernest Osborne Award.
The Elizabeth P. Ritchie Distinguished Professor Award for 2009 was presented to Professor Brad Cardinal for his excellence in teaching, mentoring, research, publications and professional leadership. Brad is well-known for his ardent support of students and their ability to publish work as undergraduates. As an exceptionally productive author himself, he inspires his students to write, challenges them to meet high standards and rigor of thought and proof, while supporting and guiding them to success in writing. One of his students said “He helped me become a better writer by challenging my stances on issues and broadening my horizons.
Professor and Extension specialist Sally Bowman is the 2009 recipient of the D. Curtis Mumford Faculty Service Award, acknowledging her service to OSU, the College of Health and Human Sciences and to Oregon. She served on committees to develop the Health Thematic Area of OSU’s Strategic Plan and helped plan and implement OSU’s new Division of Outreach and Engagement. Active in the development of the new Hallie Ford Center for Healthy Children and Families, Sally is director of the center’s Vulnerable Children and Families Core. She oversees the Oregon Nutrition Education Program for Oregon that serves more than 40,000 Oregonians each year. http://extension.oregonstate.edu/nep/
Sally also received the 2009 Administrative Leadership Award from Epsilon Sigma Phi, the national Extension honorary and the prestigious L.L. Stewart Faculty Scholar Award which recognizes an outstanding faculty member and provides resources to stimulate creative advancements in teaching, research, and extended education. The $30,000 award supports creativity and innovation among the university’s top scholars. Sally will be facilitating statewide partnerships among agencies, organizations, parent educators, and parents in order to build a statewide infrastructure for parenting education in Oregon. Such an infrastructure would promote professional development among parent educators, establish a recognized and valued career ladder, promote research and evaluation in parenting education, and improve access to evidence-based parenting education in communities across the state.
Earlier this year, the OSU Women’s Center named Women of Achievement including Extension faculty Lynn Steele and masters student Jennifer Jabson.
For 16 years Lynn Steele has been steadfast in her advocacy for immigrant Latino families and support for Latino women as they learn to establish homes in this country. Lynn leads the OSU Extension Service Metro Hispanic Nutrition office in Portland where she teaches food-related classes focused on improving nutrition, health, and safety, while maintaining traditional diets and foods. She also teaches children about nutrition and food safety topics in elementary afterschool programs and serves as an all around advocate for minorities and low-income women. Lynn worked in Latin America for 10 years and says “seeing the struggle that women suffer when they are trying to give their kids the best, but there is nothing there, is what drives me to empower women.”
Jennifer Jabson has an unwavering dedication to reducing health disparities that women face and improving the quality of their lives. A stellar PhD student in public health, her research projects focus on the prevention of metabolic syndrome in middle-aged women and the role of social support for lesbian breast cancer survivors. As a teacher, mentor, graduate student and community member Jennifer takes advantage of opportunities every day to model the roles of advocate, champion, supporter, communicator, collaborator. Faculty she works with say Jennifer is the type of change agent that is needed to advance women’s health initiatives.
