Toner is majoring in Psychology and Human Development and Family Sciences, and hopes to work in child psychology and family development, with a focus on children with Down syndrome. “My parents broke up when I was eight, and I know how kids feel when their family life is not the best,” she said. “I want to help and volunteer with those kids as much as I can,” if she doesn’t play professionally.
The College of Public Health and Human Sciences’ Child Development Center is partnering with the Corvallis School District to bring an Oregon Head Start Prekindergarten Program classroom to Adams Elementary School this fall.
Aging may be a universal experience, but culture and ethnicity affect how aging relatives fit into the family picture. Latino families, says CPHHS Assistant Professor Carolyn Mendez-Luck, tend to care for their elderly family members at home and delay institutionalization, relative to other racial and cultural groups.
“Life course research reveals both the bright sides and the dark sides of human experience,” says CPHHS Professor Rick Settersten. “This fuels the passion I feel around matters of social inequality.”
“There is a saying on the streets of downtown Cape Town that holds so much truth, ‘I came here to change Cape Town, but Cape Town changed me.’ I feel blessed to have had such a wonderful experience in the amazing country of South Africa,” Katherine says.
