Human Development and Family Sciences (HDFS) Professor Carolyn Aldwin, endowed director of the Center for Healthy Aging Research, was recently featured in Psychology Today for her study examining if hardships in life make us wiser. She found that wisdom comes not just from surviving hard times, but in how we deal with them and what we learn from those experiences. “Difficult times are a way people define themselves,” she says. “What’s important is that the event can become a catalyst for changes that come afterward.” You can read the study, “The development of wisdom: A social ecological approach,” in Journals of Gerontology: Series B.
