The Rohingya are an ethnic population primarily composed of Muslims. Prior to 2017, they largely resided in the Buddhist-majority nation of Myanmar within a small area called the Rakhine State. Last year, the Myanmar military began a brutal campaign of violence toward the Rohingya in response to an incident of Rohingya-lead violence. The Rohingya population has since fled the violence in Myanmar by crossing the border into Bangladesh.

The dynamics of a couple’s relationship, including the exclusivity of the partnership, the level of commitment to the partnership and participation in sexual decision-making with their partner, impact young adults’ decisions related to contraceptive use, new research shows.
“A lot of my work involves witnessing human suffering and vulnerability. Most of what I’ve written is supported by direct narratives from people I’ve interviewed. I strive to affect people’s lives by transmitting their voices to others and informing transformative interventions that alleviate suffering and promote health. I also strive to be a good teacher and mentor for my students – which many times simply involves active and empathic listening.”
“Our trip to London altered my perspective, specifically regarding the global need of an efficient public health structure,” says Chase Fettig, a public health senior and one of nine students who made the trip.
“My goal is to mitigate methylmercury exposure. Methylmercury intake through rice ingestion differs from fish consumption because fish contains beneficial nutrients. Since rice does not, methylmercury intake through rice ingestion may be more harmful. It’s important that we continue this research because half the global population subsists on rice as a staple food.”
Kyle Haley graduated with his bachelor’s degree in Public Health with a concentration in Health Promotion and Health Behavior in Spring 2017. Since that time, he’s been interning with the Community Epidemiology Services (CES)team at the Multnomah County Health Department. We caught up with Kyle to learn more about his time at Oregon State and in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences.
