When most people think of spring break activities, visions of poolside fun, road trips and time with family and friends likely come to mind – not a trip to Ethiopia. But for six OSU students, a spring break trip to East Africa offered them the opportunity to be involved in peer workshops, earn two credit hours and experience life in another part of the world.

Public Health sophomore Greg Heinonen will be recognized with the prestigious Waldo-Cummings Outstanding Student Award at the 2017 Oregon State University Student Awards Recognition Dinner on May 25.
The College of Public Health and Human Sciences has established a formal partnership with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Center for Maritime Safety and Health Studies to work together to improve safety and health conditions in maritime workplaces in the United States.
“Many of the learning competencies in the HPHB program align well with a successful job in health promotion. Classes such as the social determinants of health and health program planning provided me with the foundation of knowledge to assess breast health and cancer issues in the community and how to implement programs to effectively address them.”
I current work as the Health Policy and Prevention Manager for the Healthy Communities Program at Benton County Health Services. Over the last 10 years in this role, I have worked to move the program from a traditional health promotion focus to a health policy and strategic planning unit that works to address the social determinants of health through community organizing and changing policies and systems that promote community health.
