Bridging the cultural divide and teaching physical education in China

All of the people we interacted with were so gracious and kind. They went out of their way to make sure our trip was enjoyable and that we had everything we needed. The teachers in our groups asked great questions and were really engaged and interested in the conversations and activities we shared. I have even interacted with a few of them since leaving, and they have shared materials and videos of their own classes.

Mentorship comes full circle

Alana knew she wanted to make a difference in the world of public health after the first class. And from that moment forward, that’s exactly what she did.

But not before a special mentoring relationship began with CPHHS Professor Chunhuei Chi. Alana was Chunhuei’s first doctoral mentee, and the two have remained in close communication. “Alana has always been a compassionate person who cares about people who are less fortunate, both here and around the world,” he says. “She has an unrelenting appetite for knowledge that strengthens her ability to improve other people’s health and well-being.”

Faculty contribute to new “Handbook of Theories of Aging”

Because theories answer the “why” and “how” of what we’re interested in, the handbook highlights contemporary explanations for aging, Rick says, whether at the level of cells or societies. “When we have good explanations, we can also better design prevention and intervention efforts to improve human aging.”
