When most people think of spring break activities, visions of poolside fun, road trips and time with family and friends likely come to mind – not a trip to Ethiopia. But for six OSU students, a spring break trip to East Africa offered them the opportunity to be involved in peer workshops, earn two credit hours and experience life in another part of the world.

Public Health sophomore Greg Heinonen will be recognized with the prestigious Waldo-Cummings Outstanding Student Award at the 2017 Oregon State University Student Awards Recognition Dinner on May 25.
After a career as a food scientist in dairy product development, Peggy took a break to be a stay-at- home mom. It was during this time that she thought long and hard about what she wanted to do for the remainder of her career. She arrived at the decision that she would return to school as a non-traditional student and shift her career path. This would allow her to live her true passion – helping people achieve or maintain their health through their food choices.
The College of Public Health and Human Sciences has established a formal partnership with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Center for Maritime Safety and Health Studies to work together to improve safety and health conditions in maritime workplaces in the United States.
“The internships I completed as part of my undergraduate course requirements gave me hands-on experience in the fitness industry and allowed me to develop new skills and professional relationships. My first job out of college was with the same company I had interned for during my senior year.”
